Replica Sgian Dubh Dirk Dagger

Late 17th Century Sgian Dubh

The Sgian Dubh or ‘black knife’ is a traditional part of Scottish Highland dress worn by both the highland regiments of the army and civilians. It is worn traditionally on the top of the sock where it can be easily reached. It was an essential weapon during the days of clan warfare and it is still worn today as a standard part of highland dress.

Highland laws meant that it was considered offensive to go into company armed and so weapons were set aside. The Sgian Dubh would be put on a table for all see. This showed manners and lack of hostile intentions but also alerted others that the clansman could defend himself if necessary.

The Sgian Dubh has an intricate carved wood design on the handle. The blade is approximately 3.5 inches long (9.5 cm)  and is 3mm thick.  The sheath is made from leather.

The Sgian Dubh is a handmade original designed by well known Scottish knife designer John Barnett. Brand new and would be a great addition to any traditional Scottish celebration such as a wedding or would look great on a display.
